Beauties of Islam
(by Sheikh Abdul Rahman Sudais)
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Messenger, his households and Companions.
Fellow Muslims! Amid malicious and vicious media campaign against Islam, Rasulullah (SAW) and the Muslim; and in the light of false accusation being leveled against this religion of human nature, the wise among men will certainly agree that the whole world needs to know the beauties of this unique religion and its commendable qualities in order to strengthen those who believe to actualize the truth, and to confront those heinous campaign with definite proof; so that human civilization may continue positively and peace, security and stability may be established.
Brethren in faith! Behold the lofty tree that has well-established roots and many branches. No wind is able to fell it and yet it has accessible fruits that are perpetually fresh, edible and sweet. This is the likeness of Islam in its many beauties and qualities,
“And Allah makes parables for men that may take heed.”
Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “Sincerity of purpose and Islamic monotheism are a tree in the heart whose branches are good deeds and whose fruits are good life in this world and eternal felicity in the Hereafter.”
Brethren in faith! The thing that attracts the observer of the beauties of this religion is its strong foundation which is pure monotheism. Islamic Monotheism goes far beyond those mere philosophies, argumentative theories and ideological complexities. It is actually a creed that connects the entire universe with its Lord, Who is One and Has no partner and who alone has the right to be worshipped. He is the first, the last and the infinite and nothing happens but only what He wants.
“There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.” (Surah Ash-Shura 42:11)
Our evidences of this, is the Book of Allah and the authentic Sunnah and unequivocal reason that goes with healthy nature. Islamic has included all Divine Laws. Allah says:
“He (Allah) has ordained for you the same religion (Islamic monotheism) which He ordained for Noah, and that which We have revealed to you (O Muhammad), and that which We have ordained for Ibrahim, Moosa and ‘Eesaa, saying: you should establish religion and make no divisions in it.” (Surah Ash-Shura 42:13)
The fundamentals of Islam encompass all that are compatible with man’s needs in all times and all places and all that can bring him benefits in this world and the Hereafter. Islam also calls to belief in all Messengers. Allah says:
“Say: we believe in Allaah and that which has been sent down to us and that which has been sent down to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaaq, Ya’qub and to the off springs (of the twelve sons of Ya’qub); and that which has been given to Moosa and Eesaa and that which has been given to the Prophets form their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we have submitted in Islam.” (Surah Baqarah 2:136)
The Message of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) contains the Messages of all previous Messengers. Rasulullah (SAW) said: “Whosoever testifies that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, Who is One and has no partner, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger; that ‘Eesaa (Jesus) is a slave of Allah and His Messenger and that he is a Word and a Spirit from Him which He sent to Mary, and that Paradise and Hell are true, Allah will make such a person enter Paradise on whatever deed he has done.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
Which creed is then truer, more just and more upright than this creed that gives man one fate, One Lord and an Ever-Lasting message. That is why you see every right-thinking and just person agree that Islam is the only true religion because of its many beauties and virtues.
Brethren in faith! Another aspect that shows the beauties of Islam is its noble acts of worship that purify human minds and souls and refines their conduct. Allah says about prayer,
“Recite (O Muhammad SAW) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qur’ân), and perform As-Salât (Iqamât¬as¬Salât). Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahshâ’ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed) and the remembering (praising) of (you by) Allâh (in front of the angels) is greater indeed than your remembering (praising) of Allâh in prayers. And Allâh knows what you do.” (Surah Al-‘Ankaboot 29:49)
And Allah says about Zakah:
خُذْ مِنْ أَمْوَالِهِمْ صَدَقَةً تُطَهِّرُهُمْ وَتُزَكِّيهِمْ بِهَا وَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ صَلاَتَكَ سَكَنٌ لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ سَمِيعٌ عَلِيمٌ
“Take alms from their wealth in order to purify them and sanctify them with it.” (Surah Tawbah 9:103)
In spite of the huge benefits of acts of worship in Islam, they are nevertheless easily practicable, hence they are performed by the believers with sincerity and determination.
Dear brethren! Beauties of Islam did not stop at this, they rather encompass all aspects of practical life. Islam does not stand aloof from the hustle and bustle of human life. It instead directs man and towards noble goals. This emphasis the fact that Islam is in its beauties a comprehensive system that caters for both mundane and spiritual life of man in a marvelous manner. It regulated all instructions that occur between men; it encourages work and makes it an act of worship for which man will be recovered.
Fellow Muslim! There is another important aspect in which the beauty of this great religion vividly manifests. That is the moral aspect. Islam teaches its adherents virtuous traits and noblest characters. It calls to the establishment of a coherent Muslim society and international entity that is filled by love, affection, altruism, peace, justice and equality in the light of the Word of Allah that says”
“The most honourable of you with Allah is that (believe) who has piety.” (Surah Hujurat 49:13)
Islam also prohibits injustice, oppression, aggression and making mischief in the land. Allah says:
“And do not mischief on the earth after it has been set in order.” (Surah A’raf 7:56)
It guarantees the rights of man and his freedom in the light of Divine injunctions. It protects him from perversion and bestial life and indeed, guarantees the protection of his religion, life, intellect, property and honour. Allah says:
“And indeed We honored the children of Aadam, and We have carried them on land and sea, and have provided them with lawful good things, and markedly have given them excellence over many of those whom We have created.” (Surah Isrâ 17:70)
Also, in areas of social affairs or what is called personal status; and the issues of woman and family, Islam has taken good care of that. Not only this, Islam also gives concern to animals, environments and plants. The beauties of Islam also show vividly in taking care of human benefits, averting all that is harmful to man and teaching him the best values and conducts.
Dear Muslims! Another aspects that throws light on the beauties of Islam it its noble goals and great and principles that have active effects on its comprehensiveness, perpetuity and suitability for all times and places. Among its greatest principles is facilitation and lack of inconvenience. Allah says:
“Ramadan is the month in which the Qur’an was sent down: this Book is a perfect guidance for mankind and consists of clear teachings which show the right way and are a criterion of Truth and falsehood. Therefore from now on whoever witnesses it, it is obligatory on hire to fast the whole month, but if one be ill or on a journey, he should make up for the same number by fasting on other days. Allah desires to show leniency to you and does not desire to show any hardship. “Therefore this method is being shown to you so that you may complete the number of Fast days and glorify Allah for the Guidance He has shown to you and be grateful to Him.” (Surah Baqarah 2:185)
Allah also says:
“And He has not laid upon you in the religion any hardship.” (Surah Hajj 22:78)
Easiness is therefore, the most prominent trait of this great religion, for it implies justness and moderation. Allah addresses the Muslims,
“Thus We have made you (true Muslims), a just (and the best) nation.” (Surah Baqarah 2:143)
There is therefore, no exaggeration in Islam nor is negligence, for either of these two paths is an antithesis of the distinctive Islamic moderation and Justness. Ibn Al-Qayyim said: “Every issue that goes out of justness to injustice; from mercy and compassion to its opposite; from public interest to public harm and from wisdom to mockery is definitely not of Islamic law. For Islamic law represents Allah’s justice among His slaves, His mercy among mankind and His protection in the earth. It is also the sign of His wisdom and the proof of His Messenger’s truthfulness. It is the lifebuoy for the worlds and the source of salvation and prosperity in this world and the Hereafter.”
Generally, Islam contains the good of this world and the Hereafter; for it encourages all good and forbids all evils. Whoever holds fast unto it shall prosper and whoever turns away from it shall live and die in misery.
Those are the some of beauties of Islam. These lights are presented to the world of today, for it has never been in need of these lights more than now. If it follows the lights, it will be saved from its present predicaments. Islam is actually the source of safety and security for mankind and the ship of salvation for the confused and those who wallow in distress.
We are prompted to say all these because of our love for the mankind. For Allah has guided us to this religion and we have tasted its blessings. So we regard it as improper not to call other people to this truth unto which we have been guided,
“So that those who were to be destroyed (for their rejecting the faith) might be destroyed after a clear evidence, and those who were to live might live after a clear evidence.” (Surah Anfaal 8:42)
O mankind! This is our religion and these are its distinctive qualities. Why is it then being attacked? It should also be known that Islam should not be blamed as a result of malpractices of some Muslims just as medical and law professions should not be blamed because of misconduct of some doctors and judges.
Brethren in faith! I implore you to hold tenaciously to your religion especially in these days when there are many fitnahs and Islam has become strange. Beware of the agitations of falsehood mongers and,
“Be patient. Verily, the promise of Allah is true! And let not those who have no certainly of faith discourage you from conveying Allah’s Message.” (Surah Room 30:60)
Make yourselves an illuminating embodiment of the beauties of Islam and let the excellent qualities of this religion reflect in your manners. The scholars are particularly called to show these beauties to mankind practically. This is the only successful remedy for the challenges that this Ummah face regarding her religion and her lands,
“But Allah will not allow except that His light should be perfected, even though the disbelievers hate it.” (Surah Tawbah 9:32)
Fellow Muslims! Our leader and exemplar per excellence in the quintessence of the beauties of Islam is our Prophet Muhammad (SAW), He is the leader and the best of human race. Allah sent him as a mercy to mankind, and in order to perfect the excellent moral conduct. It is however saddening that this vicious campaign against Islam is extended to the person of this Great Messenger of mercy and guidance. There is no doubt that this malicious campaign is aimed at hurting the sensibilities of one and a half billion Muslims. For how can as Muslim be happy while the person of the Prophet is being attacked? May Allah have mercy on Khubaib (RA) who said: “I never wished that a thorn harm the body of the Messenger of Allah.”
The Muslims, therefore strongly condemn these heinous attacks that aim at instigating nations against Islam and Muslims and scare them away from its illuminating civilization and virtuous Message. The repetition of these crimes can turn the coexistence and mutual understanding among nations to wars and mutual enmity and as such cause mankind woes and misery.
There are however some non-Muslim who are impartial in their views about Islam. One of them said: “We have never seen in the history of mankind a teacher who was like Muhammad. Islam had led the world under the leadership of Muhammad and his followers in strength, order, good moral, in raising the standard of life, in compassionate human legislation, in religious tolerance, and in arts and scientific research..”
Another said: “The mankind is indeed proud of having a man like Muhammad. For he had, some thirteen centuries ago, in spite of his illiteracy, been able to bring about an order for which we would be the happiest if we are able to attain that in so and so years.”
Therefore, let those who attack the person of Muhammad know that they are attacking the persons of Prophets Abraham, Moses and Jesus, peace be upon them, and that they are by extension attacking Allah who sent them.
Although, these attacks can never diminish the status of the Prophet of this Message but rather increase that, the Muslims must nevertheless challenge this objectively and scientifically and through wisdom. All efforts must be concerted in this regard with the knowledge that,
“Allah has full control over His Affairs, but most of men know not.” (Surah Yusuf 12:21)
